St Hybald, a little known Saxon saint of the 7th century was probably the Abbot
of Hibaldstow. Only three other local churches are dedicated to him: those
in Ashby de la Launde, near Sleaford; Manton (although this is now a private
dwelling) and our neighbouring village of Hibaldstow where he is believed to
have been buried.
The earliest recorded church in Scawby now only survives in the lower part of the 14th century tower.
After a ‘fire’ in 1839 the rest of the church was rebuilt and extended.
St Hybald’s contains many funereal monuments to the Nelthorpe family, who lived in the adjacent Scawby Hall.
