St Nicholas’ Church is a Grade 1 listed building on a site where there has been a church since the Saxon period. The building is of national P architectural significance with a rood screen linked to Thornton Abbey. Other highlights include 15th century pew ends, a stained glass window dedicated to vicar Henry Flowers (who himself appears in the window), and a memorial to someone killed in one of the very first railway accidents. BBQ lunches, stalls, books, musical performances, bellringing and more!

Cadney - All Saints

Grade I All Saints church is a hidden treasure. Parts date back to the 12th century. It is a beautiful, peaceful calm place to visit with many interesting historical features, and volunteers will help point out these, to anyone who would like to know more.  On Saturday there is a Teddy bear parachuting event, bears can parachute from the church tower, in a fun event for all ages. Bring your own bear, or borrow a bear to take part.

Barnetby le Wold - St Barnabas

The church was built in 1926/27 to replace the existing wooden church and be more central than the 11th century St Mary’s which is sited on the edge of the village. It was unfinished as money ran out! Beautiful coloured ceiling painted in railway colours. Refreshments served over the weekend. Exhibition on “History of Barnetby” during the weekend.

Scawby - St Hybald

St Hybald, a little known Saxon saint of the 7th century was probably the Abbot of Hibaldstow. Only three other local churches are dedicated to him: those in Ashby de la Launde, near Sleaford; Manton (although this is now a private dwelling) and our neighbouring village of Hibaldstow where he is believed to have been buried.

The earliest recorded church in Scawby now only survives in the lower part of the 14th century tower. 
After a ‘fire’ in 1839 the rest of the church was rebuilt and extended. 

St Hybald’s contains many funereal monuments to the Nelthorpe family, who lived in the adjacent Scawby Hall.

Redbourne - St Andrew

This peaceful church, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries, has a tall, slender tower and a dramatic Georgian glass window of the Day of Judgement (1830). 

The interior is a mix of Decorated and Perpendicular with Georgian and Victorian. 

There are excellent 18th and 19th century monuments, ducal hatchments of the St Albans family, and the incised slab of Gerald Sothill (1410). 

Redbourne’s WW1 war memorial is located within the church. 

Our homemade cakes are also excellent!

Hibaldstow - St Hybald

We are one of only 3 churches in the country dedicated to St Hybald - the other two being our sister church in Scawby and Ashby-de-la-Launde. And we have the particular honour of having the bones of St Hybald himself buried under our chancel. 

The village name Hibaldstow means ‘burial-place of St Hybald’ and dates back to at least 664 AD. It is thought the St Hybald, possibly a pupil of St Chad, set up a mission station or monastery in what became Hibaldstow, and was eventually buried there. 

Despite the long history of Christian worship, the present church dates from 1866 (chancel) and 1875 (nave), and the tower was rebuilt in the 1960s. 

St Hybald’s occasionally plays host to pilgrimages to see the relics of St Hybald.

Gate Burton - St Helen

St Helen’s church, Gate Burton is a beautiful estate church of 1866 by Sir G. G. Scott, with a west tower, nave and chancel. 

It has geometrical tracery. The font is Norman and drum shaped, and decorated with segmental arched arcading, revealing flowers or faces.

Coffees and light snacks will be served in the church on the open weekend. 

While the road is marked private, access to the church is permitted.

Broughton - St Mary

St Mary’s church can safely be dated from 1066, although the tower is possibly earlier, giving evidence that there has been a centre of Christian worship in Broughton for over 900 years at least. There are many interesting features in St Mary’s including architecture from various periods in its history, Lindsey type grave slabs, and monuments to the Redford and Anderson families. 

ADDITIONAL TO THE BROCHURE:

As part of the festival the lady who plays the organ will be coming into the church on both Saturday and Sunday to play. Ann Sparks who painted the picture featured on the front cover of the 2026 churches festival brochure has arranged for her and some of her friends to put on an Art Exhibition over the weekend.

Broughton Walking group have organised a special walk starting at the lychgate and ending at the church for delicious refreshments. The walk will be on Sunday 17th May starting as 11am - Approx 1 hour / 2.5 miles.  Meet at the lychgate 11am if you would like to walk.

Epworth • St Andrew

A grade I listed building mostly 14th & 15th century but incorporating a 12th century name from an earlier building. 

Many restorations have taken place over the centuries, the most recent 2012-2014 when evidence of a Saxon church was found as the floor was being prepared for under floor heating. 

Samuel Wesley was Rector from 1695 to 1735 and his sons John and Charles were born and brought up in Epworth. 

It is seen as the birthplace of Methodism.

Bottesford - St Peter Ad Vincula

 

St Peter ad Vincula, Parish Church, Bottesford, by Christ Morgan

On the edge of what was once a small village this surprisingly large and breath-taking grade 1 church, is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Early English style largely dating from 13th century with 14th and 16th century aisles, the 14th century tower houses a ring of six bells dating from 1710 to 2002, which are rung regularly. A warm welcome awaits those who come to experience the incredible craftsmanship of our ancestors with some fascinating features. Enjoy light refreshments which will be available throughout. Well behaved dogs also welcome.

Laughton Methodist Church

Laughton Methodist Chapel

Dating from 1826, the chapel was used as a Sunday School until 1969. The second chapel adjacent to the first dates from 1927. A new Sunday School was added in 1975. 

The Primitive Methodist magazine of 1859 records an account by A Worsnop of the re-opening of the chapel after enlargement. This was necessary because of a revival in the winter of 1857-8 and consent was obtained from WM Ingram Esq. 

On the north wall inside Laughton Methodist church is a white stone tablet with incised gold lettering commemorating a single World War 2 casualty.

Sixhills - All Saints

All Saints church is a Grade II listed building standing in a picturesque location on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, with a wonderful view. The village has associations with Gilbert of Semperingham through the Gilbertine Priory. The church was rebuilt in the late 1860s-1875 by James Fowler of Louth. Light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Hainton - St Mary

A church of Anglo-Saxon origins rebuilt in the 13th & 14th centuries and sympathetically restored in the 19th century. The spire was suggested by Capability Brown when he redesigned the park. Inside, there is a “nationally important” series of absolutely stunning monuments to the Heneage Family. From brass of 1435 to modern memorials of 1954, in varying styles all relating to a time span of one family. Light refreshments available throughout the day.

Swallow - Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity church was started in the Norman period, but after numerous extensions and improvements over the next five centuries went into something of a decline until it was restored by the Victorians, by which time the village also had two Methodist Chapels (both now demolished. The font and the base of the tower are of the earliest period, while piscina is somewhat later, but most of what you can see belongs to the nineteenth century restoration including some rather nice stained glass in the west and south windows and a couple of memorial plaques. The War Memorial is in the churchyard and commemorates three villagers who lost their lives during WWI.

We will also have our vestments display - including the Sixhills cope, organ music, and centuries old books. There is a car parking area at the rear of the schoolroom. Linwood - St Cornelius

Home of the Lynwode family.  Two brasses of National Importance dedicated to the family.  Birthplace of William Lynwode, author of Provinciale, consolidation of chancery law used as reference worldwide.  The only Church dedicated to St Cornelius with stained glass windows, a medieval moat exists around part of the Church.  A royal deer park was situated near the Church.  Grade one listed with Grade two cross.  One of the few spired Church towers in the county.

Barlings - St Edwards

This pretty church, once part of the Abbey of Barlings, has been the centre of quiet worship for 900 years. The church has Norman and 14th Century western parts, and the Eastern end is Victorian renovation. A group of worshippers of the Barlings group meets here monthly in this beautiful and peaceful spot. This, year, only our second as part of the Festival will see light refreshments available, alongside a small display of calligraphy, and a warm welcome for visitors.

Scotter - St Peter

Our beautiful church has parts dating back to the 11th century, and unique 17th century ‘Ringers Rhymes’. 

Bell ringers will be in attendance and giving demonstrations throughout the weekend. 

The able bodied can climb the tower to view the bells and our 1848 James Harrison clock in its original case with notation and graffiti (small fee). Please ring 07971026272 on the day for times of tower visits.

A display by the local art group around the church, a mini cake stall and light refreshments.
