Scawby - St Hybald

St Hybald, a little known Saxon saint of the 7th century was probably the Abbot of Hibaldstow. Only three other local churches are dedicated to him: those in Ashby de la Launde, near Sleaford; Manton (although this is now a private dwelling) and our neighbouring village of Hibaldstow where he is believed to have been buried.

The earliest recorded church in Scawby now only survives in the lower part of the 14th century tower. 
After a ‘fire’ in 1839 the rest of the church was rebuilt and extended. 

St Hybald’s contains many funereal monuments to the Nelthorpe family, who lived in the adjacent Scawby Hall.

Redbourne - St Andrew

This peaceful church, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries, has a tall, slender tower and a dramatic Georgian glass window of the Day of Judgement (1830). 

The interior is a mix of Decorated and Perpendicular with Georgian and Victorian. 

There are excellent 18th and 19th century monuments, ducal hatchments of the St Albans family, and the incised slab of Gerald Sothill (1410). 

Redbourne’s WW1 war memorial is located within the church. 

Our homemade cakes are also excellent!

Hibaldstow - St Hybald

We are one of only 3 churches in the country dedicated to St Hybald - the other two being our sister church in Scawby and Ashby-de-la-Launde. And we have the particular honour of having the bones of St Hybald himself buried under our chancel. 

The village name Hibaldstow means ‘burial-place of St Hybald’ and dates back to at least 664 AD. It is thought the St Hybald, possibly a pupil of St Chad, set up a mission station or monastery in what became Hibaldstow, and was eventually buried there. 

Despite the long history of Christian worship, the present church dates from 1866 (chancel) and 1875 (nave), and the tower was rebuilt in the 1960s. 

St Hybald’s occasionally plays host to pilgrimages to see the relics of St Hybald.

Gate Burton - St Helen

St Helen’s church, Gate Burton is a beautiful estate church of 1866 by Sir G. G. Scott, with a west tower, nave and chancel. 

It has geometrical tracery. The font is Norman and drum shaped, and decorated with segmental arched arcading, revealing flowers or faces.

Coffees and light snacks will be served in the church on the open weekend. 

While the road is marked private, access to the church is permitted.

Broughton - St Mary

St Mary’s church can safely be dated from 1066, although the tower is possibly earlier, giving evidence that there has been a centre of Christian worship in Broughton for over 900 years at least. There are many interesting features in St Mary’s including architecture from various periods in its history, Lindsey type grave slabs, and monuments to the Redford and Anderson families.

Epworth - Wesley Memorial Methodist

Built in 1889 as a memorial to John and Charles Wesley. 

Contains the 18th century communion table used by Samuel and John Wesley in St Andrew’s, the parish church. Stained glass windows including “The Great Commission”. 

Also school rooms, manse and caretaker’s cottage on site.

Epworth • St Andrew

A grade I listed building mostly 14th & 15th century but incorporating a 12th century name from an earlier building. 

Many restorations have taken place over the centuries, the most recent 2012-2014 when evidence of a Saxon church was found as the floor was being prepared for under floor heating. 

Samuel Wesley was Rector from 1695 to 1735 and his sons John and Charles were born and brought up in Epworth. 

It is seen as the birthplace of Methodism.

Laughton Methodist Church

Laughton Methodist Chapel

Dating from 1826, the chapel was used as a Sunday School until 1969. The second chapel adjacent to the first dates from 1927. A new Sunday School was added in 1975. 

The Primitive Methodist magazine of 1859 records an account by A Worsnop of the re-opening of the chapel after enlargement. This was necessary because of a revival in the winter of 1857-8 and consent was obtained from WM Ingram Esq. 

On the north wall inside Laughton Methodist church is a white stone tablet with incised gold lettering commemorating a single World War 2 casualty.

Market Rasen - Holy Rood

Enter into the world of the mystical language of Icons. What do they mean? Why do they exist? We are running tours which will include an introduction to this mystical language. We will also have our vestments display - including the Sixhills cope, organ music, and centuries old books. There is a car parking area at the rear of the schoolroom. Please check in at the schoolroom on arrival and enjoy the delicious refreshments on offer.

Scotter - St Peter

Our beautiful church has parts dating back to the 11th century, and unique 17th century ‘Ringers Rhymes’. 

Bell ringers will be in attendance and giving demonstrations throughout the weekend. 

The able bodied can climb the tower to view the bells and our 1848 James Harrison clock in its original case with notation and graffiti (small fee). Please ring 07971026272 on the day for times of tower visits.

A display by the local art group around the church, a mini cake stall and light refreshments.

Coates by Stow • St Edith

St. Edith’s is a charming and unique pre reformation church, probably of Saxon origin. 

It has a very rare rood screen and loft not to be missed. 

Whilst steeped in history and situated in a unique setting, it attracts visitors from all over the world throughout the year. 

There is the site of the old Saxon Village only a short walk away and a medieval game can be played inside the church. 

Do come and join us and see for yourself this incredible tranquil setting and church. Access is off the Stow to Ingham road and it will be signposted.

A Grade II* listed church, greatly restored in the early 19th century, including the installation of an extensive collection of medieval stained glass by Revd. H.V. Bayley working in collaboration with architect Edward Willson.

A small 19th century Methodist Chapel. Inside we have an organ dedicated to the men and one woman who died during WWI and WWII. We are a warm and welcoming chapel, altered to suit our needs in the 21st century.

Gainsborough United Reformed Church

Gainsborough United Reformed Church by Ashley Taylor, Push Creativity

The Church was built in 1897 as a memorial to John Robinson, pastor of the Mayflower Pilgrims. 

We also hold a permanent Pilgrim exhibition in our Mayflower Room. 

The two manual pipe organ built on 1903 by Forster and Andrews, is listed by the British Institute of Organ Studies as an instrument of national importance. 

Meet our local authors and their works on display and some art exhibition from the local art class.

Enjoy some refreshments.

Tealby - All Saints

All Saints is a beautiful Grade 1 listed church in a picturesque location with wonderful views over the Wolds. It is now 200 years since Joshua Gibbons, a Tealby papermaker, was collecting tunes and writing them into a small pocket-sized manuscript book. He was a proficient f iddle player and played at local balls, feasts and other events. We have live and recorded folk music from this special notebook. We also have interesting displays about the church, manuscript, and local papermaking.

Brookenby - St Michael & All Angels


Brookenby - St Michael & All Angels by Ian S

No bell tower, no cemetery, but ample car parking space, heating and toilets. Not the typical Lincolnshire church. Brookenby Church has its home in a former accommodation block of the former RAF Binbrook. This is also home of the Angels Tearoom and Thrift shop, which is run by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. We are planning to hold an exhibition of local art work created by residents of Brookenby.

Nettleham • All Saints

Dating from Saxon times we have many beautiful stained-glass windows including the Hayward East window. 

Wall paintings and Bodley and Garner ceilings. 

Beside the beck, we are a living, thriving Church with many and varied activities, central to village life and for quiet contemplation and prayer. 

Saturday 11am to 11.45am Lincoln Society of Recorder Players.

Gainsborough - St Thomas of Canterbury

The church is a short 5 min walk from Marshall’s Yard. 

Built in 1866 in Cross Street, a small narrow street, the church is Grade II listed. 

There is a WWI memorial and photographs of how the church has looked through time. There will be a period costume display. 

The church has some stained glass and a good organ.

Refreshments include tea, coffee & cake. 

North Street and Roseway car parks are also nearby.

Welton • St Mary

Lovely church with fine features including: Christ Hospital Window, Memorial Window (planes of WWI and submarines), two standards from Old Scampton RAF camp, stencilling on ceiling above chancel, (Orford monument), and alleged gravestone of Lincolnshire poacher in the churchyard.
