Stainton by Langworth - St John the Baptist

Stainton by Langworth - St John the Baptist (photo supplied by church)

A rare opportunity to see inside a hidden gem not normally open outside of a regular monthly service on the 1st Sunday of the month.

This tiny rural church is tucked away in the centre of a working farm, so hard to find.

The current Grade II Listed grey stone church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was designed during the Georgian era by Thomas Berry of Gainsborough between 1794-95 after the previous 14th century church fell.

Barlings - St Edwards

This pretty church, once part of the Abbey of Barlings, has been the centre of quiet worship for 900 years. The church has Norman and 14th Century western parts, and the Eastern end is Victorian renovation. A group of worshippers of the Barlings group meets here monthly in this beautiful and peaceful spot. This, year, only our second as part of the Festival will see light refreshments available, alongside a small display of calligraphy, and a warm welcome for visitors.

Greetwell • All Saints

The medieval settlement of Greetwell was established before the 11th century with 20-30 households. Up to the 15th century it was self sufficient in grain and had a dairy, a smithy, bakery, church and priest.

Today, Greetwell flourishes with no village but a congregation from far and wide.

Greetwell is one mile east of Lincoln on the road to Cherry Willingham.

Snelland - All Saints

Snelland All Saints - Ashley Taylor for the National Churches Trust

This beautiful atmospheric church dates back to the 12th century. It contains beautiful carved stone medieval faces and a rare ‘Leper’s window’ that enabled succour to be passed to those with leprosy who had to stay outside the church. Ancient sundial on south elevation. Thomas Retford, vicar, courageously gave his life in the Lincolnshire Rising.

Buslingthorpe - St Michael

Copyright Ashley Taylor, Buslingthorpe St Michael *

St Michael’s Church stands framed by the large trees surrounding the part-moated farm to the east. This church is one of the few remaining buildings remaining on the site of a deserted Medieval village. Apart from its square tower, the church was rebuilt in brick in 1835. Unassuming outside, it hides treasures within: two extraordinary fourteenth-century monuments to the local De Buslingthorpe family.
