Gainsborough - St George

St George’s built in 1956 is regularly used by the community. 

In 2008 services were postponed and the worshipping community dispersed. In October 2022 the church reopened and a weekly all-age worshipping community meet together. 

The church engages with local families through its missional outreach. On Saturday a Table Top Sale will be held in the attached hall where refreshments will be served. 

This year we celebrate 70 years and a display depicting the church in this time is available.

Dunholme - St Chad

Early 13th century church featuring an ancient stone font in the Norfolk pattern. 

Within the nave, no two pillars are alike with some of the hood mouldings having small head stops.

Radiating lines are believed to have oriental and possibly solar origins, and are a rare feature found only in Lincolnshire. 

Interesting stained glass, monuments and memorials with particular reference to the rood screen figures carved by Mahomet Phillips, a Congolese sculptor born June 1876 in a small Congo settlement.

Crowle - St Oswald

St Oswald’s is a Grade I listed church which features significant Norman architecture from the 12th century including a richly carved door arch (Stone) and corbels (including braided lady). 

Remodelled in the 15th and 19th centuries inside the nave is the Crowle Stone. 

Notable Wordsworth three manual organ. 

Late 19th century stained glass windows with two further windows dedicated to the memory of the fallen in World War I.

First recorded in 1145 the church is largely 14th and 15th century, restored mid 19th century. 

The chapel has a much worn 14th century knight’s effigy, with a 14th century chest tomb, and marble floor slabs from 1690s. 

Two 14th century framed stain glass coat of arms are in the chancel, the remaining stained glass is 19th and 20th century.

The font is a plain 13th century circular bowl, and original iron ‘Hour Glass’ holder for sermons remains.

Lunches (Sat only) and refreshments together with parking at adjacent All Saints Centre.

Scotter - Methodist Chapel

Welcome to Scotter Chapel, opened in 1900 now with flexible spaces for Worship and Community use.

Scotter Heritage will show through display and artefacts how worship has developed and impacted on Scotter relating to the four Chapels that were in the village, and much more. 

Textile work on display including the ‘King John’ and ‘Planet Earth’ panels was created by Scotter Textile Group. 

The Guide unit flags will be on display in the Chapel.

Amcotts - St Mark

Built in 1853 on the site of an earlier chapel, St Mark’s is a lovely community church in a very small village that hosts many community events. 

There will be a special preview of the Vermuyden 400 years exhibition for the Rose Queen event on the 25th May 2026 to mark Charles I appointing Cornelius Vermuyden to drain parts of the Isle of Axholme. 
Local Boards showing Amcotts past and present on display.

Local Boards showing the Flixborough Disaster and the forgotten village of Amcotts will also be on display. 

And a children’s butterfly garden.

Appleby - St Bartholomew

This is a Victorian rebuild. It has an ancient Romanesque font, a Flemish pulpit, a medieval tomb unnamed, some lovely windows including one from Kemp as you go in on the left. 

We have wooden angels in the ceiling of the nave playing musical instruments. On the sister church St John’s in Scunthorpe the angels hold tools of the iron trade. 

We have a clock without a face and from the top of the tower on a clear day you can see the Wolds. 

We have the grave of Thomas Dunhill an English composer.

Thornton Curtis - St Lawrence

St Lawrence’s church is a Grade I listed building at the heart of the village of Thornton Curtis and is both beautiful and historic. 

The truly outstanding feature of the interior is the 12th century black Tournai font. 

The font is rare and attracts many visitors. 

Behind the 17th century altar table lies an original mensa.

Saxby - All Saints

A hidden gem, set in a picturesque setting, at the top of Church Lane in the centre of the Village, adjoining the Saxby Bluebell Wood and Saxby Village Hall. 

Our Church is Grade II listed, re-designed and rebuilt between 1845 & 1849 by George Gilbert Scott in the late 13th Century style, with an 1871 Church Organ and a Stained Glass panel in the North Aisle by Charles Kempe completed in 1876.

Hosted evacuees during the war. The School house was home to the headmaster and his wife for many years.

St Andrews Church is over 800 years old and its highlights include Norman arches, a beautiful east stained-glass window, a rare King James II coat of arms and links to the Mayflower Pilgrims. 

Opposite the church is a Pilgrim Fathers monument and information about the Pilgrim Walk. 

The churchyard holds war memorials, with further memorial plaques inside. 

Bell ringers and an organist will be present.

Ploughman’s lunches and cakes will be served and a warm welcome awaits all visitors, including well-behaved dogs.

Our church built in 1869 is architect James Fowler’s Victorian gothic masterpiece - The Cathedral of the Wolds. It is completely as he envisaged and his beautiful original plans and illustrations will be on display. 

We will offer tours up the impressive spire and the bells can be rung from the Ellacombe system. 

The long association with RAF Binbrook is evident in the church and Commonwealth War Graves are looked after in the extensive cemetery.

St Andrew’s church dates from 1100’s possibly built on an earlier wooden building. 

Undergoing various renovations throughout its life. Norman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian periods are clearly evidenced in the building itself. 

Originally linked to St Fromond’s in France, now part of Lincoln Diocese, Yarborough Deanery. 

It has 3 bells which are chimed on a regular basis, the oldest is dated from the 1400’s and the other 2 are from the tower restoration of 1724.

Ashby - Wesley Methodist Chapel

The chapel which opened in 1907 was probably the last of its type to be built. It contains a fully pewed two storey sanctuary with a gallery all round, a large rostrum pulpit and the organ in a chamber behind the pulpit. 

A unique feature of the church is its windows. A memorial to 27 men connected to the church who died in the 1914-18 War. There are four dedicatory windows and sixteen named windows.

Wrawby - St Mary

A church has existed in Wrawby since the year 627 and is mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1068, being the oldest surviving building in Wrawby. 

St Mary’s shows traces of various periods in history with the tower dating from the 13th century and the font from the 14th. Much was rebuilt in the 1800s. The north porch was built in 1887. 

The church stands in peaceful grounds and is now also used for worship by Wrawby Methodist Church.

Ulceby - St Nicholas

St Nicholas church is a unique Grade I listed building on a site where there has been a church since the Saxon period. The building is of national architectural significance with a rood screen linked to Thornton Abbey. 

Other highlights include 15th century pew ends, a stained glass window dedicated to vicar Henry Flowers (who himself appears in the window), and a memorial to someone killed in one of the very first railway accidents.
