Blyton • St Martin

Photo: Ashley Taylor, Push Creativity*
Blyton church has an impressive display of the flags of the allies in WWI. They hang above arcades 6 and 7 centuries old. The chancel, although much rebuilt last century, has its original East window of about 1300, its old piscina and aumbry and a 15th century window and part of the old rood beam is still over the arch. The font, with carved panels and embattled top, is a handsome example of 15th century craftsmanship.

Snarford • St Lawrence

Photo: Ashley Taylor, Push Creativity*

Nothing about the rather unremarkable exterior of this small medieval church prepares you for the breathtaking surprise of the interior. St Lawrence has some of the most spectacular memorial sculptures in Lincolnshire. The largest, from the 1580s, features life-size figures of Sir Thomas St Paul and his wife, members of a dynasty of rich lawyer politicians. Sir Thomas  reclines, dressed in armour with a gold chain round his neck, his wife lies beside him elegantly dressed with a ruff and head dress.

Nearby the Jacobean Sir George reclines with his formidable wife Lady France and their only child, the tragic Mattathia.

Lady Frances appears again with her second husband, the unsavoury Earl of Warwick.

Normanby By Spital - St Peter

St Peter’s stands in a pretty churchyard surrounded by the village houses. Close to Ermine Street, a vital artery in Roman Britain, this small medieval village church has an attractive twelfth century arcade with wonderful carvings and a sturdy and handsome tower. Foundations of a former apse are visible and further research may show that the church is of earlier date than the twelfth century. Eighteenth century additions include interesting Benefaction Boards..

We are embracing ‘Hymns, Songs & Psalms’ theme and will have flowers and exhibits to view. Visitors will receive a warm welcome, light refreshments and a chance to browse amongst the many plants and books for sale. The most notable feature of our church, nestled in a valley at the foot of the Wolds is the tower. Except for the 15th century top stage and buttresses it was built in late Saxon times.

Surrounded by trees, St Peter’s is a peaceful and unspoilt church with an appealing simplicity. The solid rustic tower is from the twelfth century or even earlier, and the rest of the church dates mainly from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The windows in the south aisle contain rare and pretty fourteenth century stained glass showing St Catherine with her wheel (looking strongly like a dart board) and St Cecilia playing a handheld organ.

Faldingworth • All Saints

Faldingworth All Saints *
We are very proud of our church. We came close to closing in 2022 but have had huge assistance from the community of Faldingworth in clearing and revitalising the grounds and cleaning and caring for the church itself. We have a special connection with the Polish Air Force and squadron of Polish airmen and crew stationed at RAF Faldingworth in WWII. We have a wonderful window dedicated to the squadron.

The gates commemorate the sacrifices made by the whole of
300 Polish Squadron right down to the individual

This little roadside church is the thirteenth century chancel of a larger church which was a ruin until 1889, when the chancel was gently restored and a west porch added. Inside you can see a fourteenth century stone slab with an incised cross and chalice commemorating a priest, and Latin inscriptions in praise of the Virgin Mary adorn on the wooden ceiling. A fine font and pews have been rescued from other historic churches.

Buslingthorpe - St Michael

Buslingthorpe St Michael *

St Michael’s church stands framed by large trees surrounding a part-moated farm, it is one of the few remaining buildings of the site of a deserted medieval village. Apart from its square tower, the church was rebuilt in brick in 1835. Unassuming outside, it hides treasures within; two 14th century monuments to the De Buslingthorpe family - one a brass effigy of a knight in armour on a tomb chest showing clearly the clothes worn in battle at that time.
